OUR STORY

The Jaques family welcome you to the Sawley Kitchen

An artisan family run Yorkshire bakery producing a selection of the finest award winning products. Specialising in handcrafted delights, baked in the traditional way using our vintage family recipes

Robin & Nicky Jaques became partners both at work & in real life 36 years ago. Rob had years of hospitality experience under his belt, with time spent at several prestigious Yorkshire landmarks. Nicky spent a few years working her way up the ladder to Manager within Betty’s of Harrogate, the indisputable leader in confectionery.


Where they initially met, they went on to manage The Sawley Arms as a couple, with Nicky heading up the kitchen and Rob leading front of house.

"When the pub was sold, Rob and Nicky found themselves homeless and without a job. They had a choice… sink or do something INTERESTING!"

They bought a commercial oven called Bridgitte & decided to put Nicky's baking experience to use. Baking to their vintage family recipes they had an unshakeable belief that their biscuits were the BEST.

On October 15th 2012 they proudly threw open the doors of The Sawley Kitchen. An artisan bakery based at Sycamore Business Park in Ripon, North Yorkshire. Over the past decade Sawley Kitchen has grown beyond recognition. Alongside selling delicious goodies via the website and at various market stalls, they deliver every day to farm shops, delis & cafes nationwide. You'll also find Sawley Kitchen biscuits in the rooms of various 5* hotels including The Ritz London, The Chester Grosvenor and The Grand in York.

 

In 2017 Rob & Nicky were thrilled to welcome their son Dan to the family business when he left the parachute regiment.
 

A note from Nicky...

 

Sadly, I now have to add a little extra footnote. Robin, my husband & co-founder lost his fight against cancer in March 2020. Rob leaves us so much – his love for the company & his ethos of “never compromising on the quality of your ingredients” is still apparent in the fine and unmistakable quality of every packet. Keep an eye out for his little Robin dotted around our website.

We know that he would be absolutely delighted with our latest team member, our daughter Loz who is leading our Marketing and Social Media from her home in Lanzarote.

Myself, Dan, Loz & our cracking bakery team will continue to build on Rob’s dream. So please stay a little while, visit our shop, scroll through our images.
